Obituary for Mary Glass

Mary GlassWe regret to report the death of Rose Mary Elizabeth Glass who passed away on 16th February 2025, aged 83 years. She was born on 20th July 1941 and preferred to be called by her second name Mary.
Before the island was evacuated in 1961 she worked in the canning factory at Big Beach. During her time in the UK she worked in a chicken factory along with other islanders and later worked as a housekeeper for the family of Roger LeMaitre, geologist on the GISS.
After her return to Tristan she married the late Leonard Glass in 1967. They had no children of their own but were always happy to look after the family’s children.
She was then employed on the island as the Residency’s housekeeper. She served many Administrator’s up until her retirement but was called back to the Residency on a few occasions to help out.
Mary also helped for a couple of years after her retirement cleaning at the school and crèche. She also worked at the factory processing and was doing so right up to the time of her illness.
She enjoyed going on Nightingale trips with her husband Leonard. She also enjoyed camping at weekends but her greatest hobby was working in the potato patches.
Mary was a keen church attender and rarely missed a Sunday service.
Mary is survived by her sister Jeanette, sister Dilys, brother David and all their families. She will be dearly missed by all.
