Obituary for Judy Green
Judy Elizabeth Ann Green (née Lavarello), passed away in Cape Town on 23rd July 2024 aged 71. A memorial service was held in St Mary's Church on 2nd August to coincide with her cremation ceremony in Cape Town. Judy was born on the 16th of January 1953, the eldest of three children to Gladys and Lindsay Lavarello. She grew up on Tristan, where her early years were marked by the eruption of the island's volcano in 1961, which led to her family's evacuation to the United Kingdom. During this time, Judy was one of the children featured in a BBC recording. Judy married Ken Green on the 19th November 1970, and together they built a family that became the centre of her life. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her career began on 16th January 1971 when she became Secretary to the Administrator. In 1983 she took on the role of Manager of the Island Store, where she dedicated the remainder of her professional life until her retirement. Judy was known for her dedication and hard work in every aspect of her life. Even after retirement she worked part-time in Agriculture until her passing. A person of great character, Judy was both cheerful and direct. Her nephew once humorously described her as the perfect "Sergeant Major", a sentiment that captured her no-nonsense, yet loving nature. Judy had a deep love for her family, especially her grandchildren, and was always ready with a laugh or a word of wisdom. In her spare time, Judy was a passionate gardener, taking great pride in working in the potato patches. She was also a talented knitter, particularly skilled in Fair Isle patterns, and enjoyed spinning the island wool to create unique garments that are now treasured by many. |

Judy's skill extended to sewing, and she made bridesmaid dresses, Christmas outfits, and professionally upholstered lounge suites for many islanders. Judy had a deep love for the outdoors and was often seen walking on the mountain to pick berries or going to the Caves. She climbed St. Mary's Peak with Ken on multiple occasions. She cherished her visits to Nightingale Island and her holidays at Stoney Beach and the Caves. A faithful member of St. Mary's Anglican Church, Judy volunteered her time and talents for many years, serving on the Church Council and assisting with various activities. Despite living with an illness for many years, Judy's spirit remained unbroken. She lived life to the fullest, always embracing every opportunity to be with her loved ones and continue her many passions. Judy is survived by her mother, Gladys, her sister Hilary, her husband Ken, her children Martin, Vanessa, Natasha, and Kirsty, her daughter-in-law Iris, sons-in-law John, Simon, and Eugene, and her beloved grandchildren Sasha, Rachel, Chloe, Jamie, Owen, Aiden, and Ella, as well as great-grandchildren Sophie, Jake, and Liam. Judy's family and friends will forever treasure her memory, and she is deeply missed by all who knew her, both on Tristan and beyond. |
