Obituary for Benjamin Green

Benjamin Green, always called ‘Benny’, passed away on the 18th February 2023 aged 87 years. Benny was born on 2nd December 1935, the second of eight children born to Freddie and Alice Green. Benny married Sylvia Repetto on 20th January 1962 in Bletchingley Church in Surrey in a double wedding ceremony with Lars and Trina Repetto. The reception was held at Pendell Camp only a few days prior to the islanders’ move to Calshot in Hampshire.

Benny was chosen as a member of the Resettlement Survey Party who departed Southampton in August 1962. He was one of six fishermen who agreed to work aboard the fishing vessels Tristania and Frances Repetto while the land-based party of six island men prepared the village for a possible later re-settlement of the island. Benny and the other fishermen came ashore in December to boost the land-based team and pave the way for the re-settlement of Tristan in 1963.

Benny went on to become a respected member of the community, serving on the Island Council and occupying senior positions at the island’s fishing factory. He was one of the coxswains of the longboat Lorna and trips under sail to Nightingale Island were a highlight of Benny’s year.

Benny is survived by his wife Sylvia, son Shaun, daughters Rita Repetto and Jacqueline Lavarello, daughter-in-law Renee Green, sons- in-law Gary Repetto and Duncan Lavarello, grandchildren Kimberley, Janice and Dylan Green, Jonathan, Julian, Riaan and Clifton Repetto and Janine Lavarello.

Our sincere condolences go to Benjamin's wife, children, siblings, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
