Reports and photos from Kelly Green and Philip Kendall
As the holiday season approached, the Tristan da Cunha community was abuzz with festive activities that brought warmth and joy to the island. Mid-December marked the beginning of this exciting time, with several cherished events bringing residents together in celebration.
The School Show
The festivities kicked off with the much-anticipated school play, an event filled with laughter, fun, and a great sense of community spirit. The students delighted the audience with lively singing and dancing, presenting a heartwarming depiction of the annual Tristan tradition of Ratting Day. The performance showcased the children's talents and brought a sense of pride and entertainment to all who attended.
Nine Lessons and Carols
On Sunday 15th December, the community gathered at St. Mary's Church at 5:00pm for the traditional Nine Lessons and Carols. This beautiful service provided a moment of reflection and unity as readings and carols filled the church, creating an atmosphere of peace and festivity.

Pensioners' Tea Party
On Tuesday, December 17th, the Administrator and his wife Louise hosted the Pensioners' Tea Party, a beloved event on the holiday calendar. The gathering featured delicious food and drinks, with the highlight being an engaging game of bingo that brought smiles and excitement to all participants. The Administrator delivered an inspiring speech, expressing gratitude for the contributions of our elders and sharing warm wishes for the season.
Shopping and Holiday Preparations
Wednesday 18th December marked the final day of shopping at the island store for the next three weeks, as preparations for the holiday break were in full swing. Residents stocked up on essentials, looking ahead to the much-anticipated break starting Friday 20th.
Carols in the Albatross Bar
On Thursday 19th December, people gathered in the island's pub - the Albatross Bar - to sing Christmas carols and drink mulled wine.
Break Up Day
Break Up Day on the 20th December is always a day of partying, as departments let their hair down before the Christmas and New Year break. This year though, there was also serious moment when the island was asked to help with a maritime emergency. The SAR team brought ashore an injured sailor from a passing bulk carrier for treatment in the hospital. He was treated promptly and is recovering well.
Expat's Christmas Dinner
While all the island families gather for their Christmas dinners - traditionally featuring stuffed roast mutton - the expatriate staff from the hospital, school, and factory, etc, meet for their own festive meal. This year their dinner was hosted at the Residency by Administrator Philip Kendall and his wife Louise.
All the above events set a joyful tone for the festive season, reminding us of the importance of community, tradition, and togetherness. As we continue to celebrate, the spirit of Tristan shines bright, making this season truly special.
Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
