New Apostolic Administrator for the Catholic Community

Friar Hugh Allan, Prior of Norbertine Community of St Philip's Priory, Chelmsford, has been appointed as the new Apostolic Administrator of the Prefecture of the Falkland Islands and Ecclesiastical Superior of the Missions of the islands of Ascension, St Helena and Tristan da Cunha, for a period of five years.

Friar Allan succeeds Monsignor Michael McPartland who has been incumbent of this post since August 2002 and who has made regular visits to support the Catholic community based at St Joseph's Church, Tristan da Cunha.

Friar Allan said, upon hearing of his appointment: "I am delighted to receive my appointment as Apostolic Administrator. The day after I received the letter from the Nuncio I visited Monsignor McPartland and received his blessing to begin this new mission for the people of the South Atlantic. I hope and pray that we will be able to build on the excellent gift of service he has given so generously to the Church. Pope Francis has asked us to take mercy to the ends of the earth. I hope and pray that the gift of mercy will be at the heart of this new moment in the life of the family of God in the South Atlantic."

We look forward to reporting on Friar Allan's visits to Tristan da Cunha.

Sea Sunday and Farewell Presentation to Reverend Denzall Snell

Report and photos from Dawn Repetto

Sea Sunday was held at St Mary's Church on 26th June.

It is a special time when we pray for all those that go to sea especially our island fishermen, ahead of the start of the 2016-2017 fishing season which begins on Friday 1st July. During the service Father Denzall and his wife being presented with a farewell gift of a model island longboat from the Church.

Father Denzall and his wife Sinyati will depart on the delayed July Edinburgh sailing. They arrived in May 2014 and we await news of the appointment of another priest. Prior to Rev Denzall's arrival Tristan had been without a priest since July 2010, and it is hoped the island will not face a similar gap.

Photos show:

Mothering Sunday and Harvest Festival on Sunday 6th March 2016

Report from Dawn Repetto
Mothers Day and Harvest Festival was held on 6th March at St Mary's and Joseph's Church. It was a beautiful calm day with not a breath of wind. Although the harvest had not been one of the best the community was still extremely grateful and the Church was well attended and decorated with people and food. The community spent the day visiting family and many spent the day at the Potato Patches. With seas so calm there was a lot of wildlife spotted at Runaway Beach and Flat Rocks. The community would like to say a special thank you to David and Ferne Clarke who donated 5 boxes of foodstuff to our Harvest Festival.

Editor's Note: We will publish Dawn's photos of the wildlife on a separate page soon.
