Advert for Agriculture Adviser gains international interest

The advert placed in January 2016 on this website (see Jobs page) and in the UK specialist farming media, has created international interest with articles appearing in several periodicals in the UK and overseas. As a result there has been a surge of interest in Tristan da Cunha, including new visitors to the website.

The last Agriculture Officer to occupy a long-term post was Stiubhard Kerr-Liddell who left the island in December 1982. Dereck Rogers became the first islander to take on the Head of Department post after Stiubhard left, and since 1982, there have only been short visits of vets and agriculture advisers to Tristan.

Stiubhard is shown resplendent in his formal Scottish dress in the foreground of the photo right, taken by the Editor, as he throws confetti on newly-weds Richard and Francesca Green, outside St Mary's Church on 25th November 1982. Also in the photo is Sharon Glass (right).
Coincidentally, on 21st January 2016, Richard and Francesca's son Rodney was married in St Joseph's Church

Retired donkeys grazing

Dawn Repetto sent these two delightful photos of groups of donkeys grazing by Goose Hill on 4th January 2016.

Editor's Notes:

It looks like the group of donkeys number about nine animals. Dawn refers to them as 'retired' as donkeys are no longer used to carry loads, historically people and / or goods like firewood. They compete with cattle and sheep for limited pasture, and so, from time to time the Island Council consider a cull to limit their numbers. Nostalgia currently reigns, and this group represents a 'healthy' little herd. During one Island Council donkey purge in the 1980s, only those donkeys used by their owners for carriage could remain, so there was a spate of donkey riding, always conspicuous, so owners could keep their animals!
