Christmas 2016

Photo report from Dawn Repetto

Christmas time on Tristan is a special time to spend with family and friends and to reflect on the simpler things in life.

We held Break Up Day on the 21st December but due to the unloading of the MV Glory only a few of the ladies had a party so it was a very quiet affair. There are no photos this year due to it not being a proper breakup.

The MV Glory completed her unloading late Boxing Day evening. The community was happy this was successfully completed and the new hospital is safely ashore. They were also pleased the Glory crew could now return home to their family after being here since early November.

Feeding an orphan calf on Tristan King bird and chick near Calshot Harbour
Orphaned baby calves are looked after and nurtured in the absent of their mothers. We also have time to enjoy Tristan's unique wildlife and had the opportunity to view a baby king bird (Antarctic Tern) and mother that had hatched by Calshot Harbour.
A healthy patch of potatoes

The weather has not been nice and we have been experiencing quite a bit of rain for this time of year. The potato crop is looking very good which cheers the community's spirit after having a poor season last year. A few of the young people started their camping trip at the Patches early, but most will probably go after New Year.

The potato crop is looking very good this year. They are watched closely for any signs of caterpillars that can quickly strip a potato field in a few days.
