Death Notice for Michael Swales

We regret to report the death of Tristan da Cunha Association co-founder and President Michael Kidson Swales on 22nd December 2024 at the age of 94 after a long illness. |

Michael was born on 20th December 1930, and in October 1955 first arrived on Tristan da Cunha as a zoologist on the Gough Island Scientific Survey. This started a dedicated friendship with Tristan islanders and support for their community lasting nearly seventy years. He was awarded a British Empire Medal in the 2015 New Year Honours list for 'services to the community of Tristan da Cunha'. We extend condolences to Michael's family. He will be missed by many on Tristan da Cunha and across the world. Michael's funeral took place on Friday 17th January 2025. A tribute will be prepared for pubication in the next Tristan da Cunha Newsletter. |
