Nigel Phillips to take up post in August 2022

New Governor Appointed

New Governor for St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha

The FCDO announced on 4th April 2022 Mr Nigel Phillips CBE has been appointed Governor of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha in succession to Dr Philip Rushbrook. Mr Phillips will take up his appointment during August 2022. The present Governor, Dr Philip Rushbrook, is currently planning to leave St Helena in June 2022.

Mr Phillips is presently Governor of the Falkland Islands and Her Majesty's Commissioner for South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands having served in this post since 2017. He is married to Emma, and they have one daughter.

Nigel was a Commissioned Officer in the Royal Air Force between 1984 and 2017 during which time he gained experience in a number of senior roles in the UK and overseas including:

  • Deputy Military Representative Ministry of Defence (MOD), UK Permanent Representation to the European Union, Brussels. (2016-2017)
  • MOD, Head, Russian Strategic Studies/Wider Europe Policy (2014-2016)
  • Member of Royal College of Defence Studies (2013-2014)
  • Language training (Russian), Defence Academy (2012-2013)
  • Defence Attaché in Warsaw (2010-2012)
  • Deputy Commandant and Garrison Commander Defence College of Communications and Information Systems (2007-2009)
  • Defence Attaché in Stockholm (2003-2007)
  • Senior Staff Officer Communication Operations, Defence Communications Services Agency Planning (2001-2003)
  • Student on the Advanced Command and Staff Course, Defence Academy, (2000-2001)
