Tristan featured in unique presentation to retiring Falkland Islands Representative

Sofa, So Good

Report and photos from Tristan Government UK Representative Chris Carnegy

Tristan’s storm-damaged Residency has helped inspire a unique retirement gift for the Falkland Islands’ UK Representative.

Sukey Cameron bowed-out on October 31st, after 29 years in the role. Her Tristan colleague Chris Carnegy compiled a picture book as a parting gift from all her fellow Representatives.

‘Sofa, So Good’ is a survey of the Residencies of the UK Overseas Territories. It was inspired by a light-hearted comment once made by Sukey, that creating such a book was her retirement ambition.

The buildings that house OT governors and administrators vary enormously, from the palatial splendour of Bermuda to the cosy but unglamorous buildings of Ascension and Pitcairn.

Tristan’s entry in the book highlighted the temporary office role of the island’s Residency, the entries in the guest book from 1963 when the population returned from exile after a volcanic eruption - and the annual visit of the scarily dressed ‘Okalolies’ on December 31st in celebration of Old Year’s Night.
