Report from Tina Glass

On Friday 22nd February the gong was rung early by Chief Islander Ian Lavarello to announce the annual Queen's Day.

The first event for the day began with the Fishing Competition for adults and children. Later during the morning the usual competitions were held at St Mary’s School (best doughnuts, vegetables, plants and flowers etc).

Judging for the Fishing competition took place at 11 am and other activities at 12 noon. The judges this year were Marina Burns, Toncho Dimitrov, Dave Hendrikse, Maxime Le Maillot and our locum doctor Lesley Cupitt.

At 2pm the children’s sports and other competitions got under way. The children were all excited and full of enthusiasm.

There were many events arranged by the departments for the day and these included, wheelbarrow race, eating the most apples in 1 minute, throwing the welly, guessing the correct amount of money in a jar, pin the tail on the donkey and an electronic game.

A football match took place between the Tristan Tigers and a local mixed team. The afternoon was rounded off by a game of Football Rounders which is a popular Tristanian sport.

At 6pm the Administrator held a reception for the community at The Residency. Once everyone had received a drink the admin gave a short speech and toasted the Queen. Following this, prizes were given out.

Thanks to Ovenstone who donated a most generous draw prize comprising a free trip to Cape Town. In addition the Tristan da Cunha Government donated £ 150 for accommodation in Tristan House. The prize was won by Paul Repetto.

Afterwards, with everyone in good spirits a dance was held at the Prince Philip Hall, where everyone danced the night away.

Tristan Wheelbarrow Races

In the UK Wheelbarrow races are popular features of children's sports days with one child being the 'barrow' and balancing on their hands, whilst another holds them between their legs and 'pushes'

On Tristan they use real wheelbarrows and this year popular races were organised for children, men and women
