Report from Rhyanna Swain, with additional photos from Maria Swain and the Conservation Department
On Thursday 8th of June 2023 St Mary's School celebrated World Ocean Day! It was a day for the children to appreciate the ocean that surrounds them. Lots of activities took place.
At first, there was an assembly done by Mr Peter, a song was sang and the children watched a short video about World Ocean Day around the world. After this, the whole school made their way to the beach where a wreath was laid into the water and a prayer was said thanking the ocean. The children were put into teams and were asked to draw some beach art, something regarding the Ocean and the wildlife that lives in it. This was very exciting for them and the children thoroughly enjoyed it.

Once this excitement was over, they made their way back to the school where they did some play dough models of an underwater scene, played skittles, drew the head and tail on a fish and enjoyed lots of food and refreshments. Playgroup and Classes 1 and 2 did an under the sea dance which was done brilliantly by all. They also had to write about what they love about the ocean while the older students wrote poems. Each class was judged on their work and the pupil with the best written work was awarded a prize. The day came to an end, and prizes were given to the individual children and teams that won. All the children were given a bag of goodies, so no one was left out. |
