Implications for Tristan da Cunha of new UK Government commitments

Tristan Represented at State Opening of Parliament

Report and Photo from Tristan Government UK Representative Chris Carnegy

It was an honour to represent Tristan on Thursday 19th December 2019 at the State Opening of Parliament.

Immediately after the election, I sent a report to the island summarising the implications for Tristan da Cunha of Boris Johnson's decisive victory. His manifesto included commitments to the Blue Belt programme of ocean protection, to continued funding for international development, and to respecting the democratic rights of the people of all UK Overseas Territories.

Just one week on, I and colleagues from other OTs, including the Falklands and St Helena, were seated in the Royal Gallery to see the Queen and Prince Charles process to the House of Lords. Her Majesty's speech laid out the broad outline of the government's plans. The early months of the new Parliament will be dominated by Brexit: both leaving the EU and negotiating a future relationship with it.
