People wishing to carry out special projects in the Tristan da Cunha island group must declare their intention in writing when seeking project permission, and fulfill the conditions detailed here.

Tristan da Cunha crestThere is an overwhelming international interest in visits to Tristan by journalists, authors, historians, scientists and film makers. Those who intend to carry out Special Projects must declare their intention in writing when seeking project permission. A non-refundable application fee of £500 is charged when you are applying for permission to come to the Island for special projects. The Island Council will evaluate your application on merit and if its approved you will be charged a further once off Special Project Fee as determined by the Council on pro-rata basis per project, depending on duration and number of people.

All film crews, journalists, authors, researchers, historians and scientists on environmental or conservation projects and special projects must pay the Special Project Fees before departing for Tristan da Cunha.

Special Conditions

All visitors involved in the project will be requested to sign a binding contract and comply with specific conditions as laid down by the Island Council, including, but not limited to:

  1. Only one film on the Island is allowed per project. If you wish to make more than one film during your visit, each project should have a separate application, proposal and non-refundable application fee of £500
  2. Fee payment must be made in advance
  3. No intrusion into private lives of Islanders
  4. Film, series, documentary, news article or program to be approved by Tristan da Cunha Island Council before release
  5. A copy of the film, series, documentary, news article or program is to be retained on Tristan da Cunha.
  6. Copies of films should also be sent to the Tristan da Cunha Association for possible screening at their Annual Gatherings in the UK.
