The final set of stamps in the four part series commemorating the 50th anniversary of the volcanic eruption in 1961 and the resettlement of the island in 1963 features ships of this period. HMS Puma (25p) hosted the Resettlement Survey expedition in 1962. HMS Jaguar (35p) visited the island in 1961 to make preliminary investigations prior to The Royal Society scientific expedition of 1962. The MV Tristania (95p), one of two fishing vessels licensed to fish Tristan waters, was heavily involved during the entire volcano period. The MV Stirling Castle (£1.10p) took the evacuated islanders from Cape Town to England in 1961. The MV Bornholm (£2) brought the final group of returning islanders from England to Tristan in 1963. The SAS Transvaal (sheetlet background) took The Royal Society scientific expedition to the island in 1962. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
