Introduction

     The Tristan da Cunha Islands have many unique species of plants and animals found nowhere else in the world. Many of these are critically endangered and it is vitally important that we have robust and appropriate policies in place to safeguard the unique wildlife and habitat.

     This is an exciting opportunity to join the small (staff of four) Tristan da Cunha Conservation Department (TDCCD) who manage conservation policy and procedures across the four islands, two of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Purpose of the Job

  • Provide efficient and effective conservation policy management across the whole of the Tristan da Cunha Archipelago.
  • Taking the island’s Strategic Sustainable Development Plan as the starting point, to implement policies and to increase and safeguard long term conservation sustainability.
  • This job profile is not an exhaustive list of duties and responsibilities. There may be other ad hoc duties that fall within the remit of the role that the job holder may need to complete. In addition, the job holder will be required to carry out any other reasonable duties as requested.

The role would include:

  • Continuing to update specific TDC Conservation legislation, policies, management plans procedures in-line with UK and international (UNESCO) protocols. This includes:
    • Nightingale and TDC Island Management plans.
    • Engagement with Blue Belt partners and help with policy advice for the TdCG to declare a marine protection strategy by 2020.
    • Updating the Bio-Diversity Action Plan (BAP).
    • Assist with the management of BEST, Darwin and other projects.
    • Ensuring new Permit scheme is being correctly implemented.
    This list is only an overview of certain areas and does not include the full list of reports/policies/legislation that require updating:
  • Identifying and initiating contact with UK Universities to deliver possible Conservation research projects for the archipelago.
  • Assisting will all policy initiatives in regards to the Gough restoration, Rock-hopper, Albatross projects etc.
  • Identifying suitable (and certified) training for TDC Conservation personnel.
  • Building stronger links with Falklands, Ascension and St Helena Conservation Departments to develop a secondment scheme between the islands.
  • Developing a clear management plan for the MPA 6 year research programme – working closely with RSPB – coordinating and organising the work into a clear structure for the island to manage . 
  • Training and mentoring TDC staff in policy formation – specifically permits and bio-security.
  • Ensuring TDCCD adheres to international conservation commitments to the four islands, and if not - addressing the gaps.
  • Ensuring the new reformed TBAG is fit for purpose and assisting the island develop the new BAP.

Terms

This job is based in the United Kingdom and would suit someone who can work from home and work flexibly. The salary is £22K with annual leave of 30 days. There will be a requirement to attend conferences within the UK and sometimes overseas. Occasional visits to Tristan might also be needed.
