Earthquake Report - 8th June 2016

A 5.1 magnitude earthquake was reported at a depth of 10km at 42.65 S and 15.98 W.
This earthquake is not rated as significant by the BGS. It's epicentre is some 500km SSW of Tristan da Cunha and the earthquake is close to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It is the result of sea-floor spreading at the ridge as the South American and African plates are pushed apart by rising magma currents and is not at all associated with tectonic activity at the Tristan hotspot.
We publish this routine report in case the mention of the 'Tristan da Cunha Region' raises any alarm.
