Tristan's expat vet, Joe Hollins, turned 60 during his tour of duty on the island, and celebrated it in true Tristan style.

Joe Hollins' Party

Message from Joe Hollins and photo from Geraldine Repetto

Tristan's expat vet, Joe Hollins, celebrated his 60th birthday on the 9th September 2017,
although the actual day of his birthday was the 25th September.

In September this year to my great surprise I somehow turned 60, and where better to celebrate than the remotest inhabited island in the world.

Geraldine Repetto kindly took me in hand and with great enthusiasm organised a party for me in the hall. I was forbidden from taking a sneak preview, so when I walked into the hall I was stunned by all the hard work put into the brilliant decorations, complete with woolly sheep hanging on the wall – not live ones fortunately!  I provided the lubrication and the delicious food was kindly brought in by Geraldine’s co-conspirators, with an amazing cake made by Kirsty (aka ‘Krusty’) Green complete with a stethoscope so realistic I wanted to use it. It was a tremendous night, complete with the traditional Pillow Dance.

Many thanks to all who came, to Paul and Geraldine, and to everyone who helped, tending the bar, providing the music, cooking the food, and decorating the hall. And of course for all the lovely gifts. I have a great range of skilfully knitted and colourful woollen hats, socks and sweaters, all of which I use regularly, and many other gifts as well. The knitting shows great skill and tradition, and it has reminded me that wool is far warmer than synthetics. It is the people who make a great party and you all made it memorable, proving yet again that Tristan is a very special place.
