The Long Run for Tristan - Vancouver Marathon May 1st 2016

What inspired Neil to run a marathon for Tristan? Here is his response :

Alison Hentley's remarkable legacy of half marathons planted the initial seed in my mind. As I thought about the unique challenges future leaders in Tristan da Cunha face in accessibility to higher education, I was inspired to help narrow the gap. After 200 years of nearly continuous settlement on the world's remotest inhabited community, the resilient islanders deserve the chance to build a sustainable future, and access to higher education increases the odds to successfully tap new economic opportunities. I invite you to join me as a sponsor to help the Tristan Education Trust Fund reach its funding goal to perpetually support educational initiatives.

The marathon distance in Tristan terms takes some imagination: The marathon would add 2.2KM to the 40KM circumference of Tristan, 4.2km to neighbouring Nightingale Island (38KM) and 2KM to Inaccessible Island (40KM) from Tristan. The next speck of land would be two consecutive ultra-marathon races away at 395KM to Gough Island, and an epic 2430KM to the nearest permanent human settlement at St. Helena- approximately 57 back-to-back marathons. I began training for the Vancouver Marathon in early January, and look forward to a strong and favourable response to collectively help Tristan "in the long run"!

A month-long visit I made to Tristan da Cunha in late 2010 left a profound and lasting impact on me. There was much I learned from the islanders about life, and I consider myself fortunate for my education on Tristan.
